In 1492, at the time of Columbus’s arrival, the Taíno’s principal religious ceremony was the Cohoba ritual, in which tobacco was smoked to open communication with the divine. The behíke (witch doctor) entered a trance to speak with the gods and ancestral spirits, asking for protection and well-being.

The Taíno believed that the dead journeyed to a sacred realm—

a peaceful resting place,

a spiritual paradise—

called Coabey.
