“Cucubano” is the Taíno word for the click beetle (Pyrophorus luminosus), a small insect known for producing bioluminescent light from both its back and mid-section.

According to tradition, Taíno women adorned their hair with these glowing beetles, and the Taíno people used the beetle’s luminous “ink” to paint their bodies, allowing them to glow as they smoked cohoba (tobacco) during sacred religious rituals.
